200 services, 45 million subs for IPTV in 2010
IPTV is hot to trot: the latest in a series of market reports, from TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Pay-TV Research service, has revealed a surge in both services and, most importantly, subscribers.
TeleGeography calculates that more than 40 telcos launched IPTV services in 2010, bringing the number of IPTV services to more than 200. On the back of this growth was a subsequent 38% year on year rise in the number of IPTV subscribers, reaching 45 million. For Q4 alone, the growth was 9%. Consistent with other recent reports into IPTV, the research found that Western Europe, and France in particular, was setting the pace by that Asia, especially China, was set to take leadership. In TeleGeography’s analysis, Western Europe accounted for 40% of global subscribers in 2010, 5% ahead of the Asia Pacific region. And at the end of 2010, French IPTV subs made up 23% of the global total; followed by China and the US both on 16%; South Korea, 8%, and Japan 4%. However, indicating just how quickly the lead could change, the number of IPTV subscribers in the latter region was found to be growing more than twice as rapidly as in Western Europe. Meanwhile the number of fixed broadband internet subscribers grew by 13% in 2010 to reach over 530 million, with telcos accounting for 82% share of the total. Whilst impressive, this meant that telcos were selling IPTV services to just over 10% of their broadband internet customer base. This offered great potential explained TeleGeography’s John Dinsdale: “With some 90% of the broadband base left to be targeted, clearly there is room for substantial IPTV growth. However, due to fierce competition from cable TV and satellite DTH services, IPTV has so far managed to gain only a 6% share of global pay-TV subscribers. We project that IPTV’s share of the pay-TV market will grow but that it is unlikely to exceed 10% within the next five years”.
