Mumbai (PTI): Tata Sky, on Tuesday said that it was just a 100 short of three-million set top boxes in sales since its launch about twenty months ago.
“In less than 30 months, we would have sold to more than 3-million subscribers, which is a record,” Tata Sky Managing Director, Vikram Kaushik, said at a seminar here.
The DTH business is estimated to grow at 680 per cent in the next seven years.
Bharti Enterprises is a new company that has entered the DTH business. A couple of months ago, Anil Ambani’s Reliance entered the DTH business while Dish TV is another player.
Tata Sky makes its set top boxes at its facilities in Pune and Noida.
Kaushik said the key imperatives hurting this industry were high taxes and licence fees. “We are overburdened with taxation and licence fees,” he said. “If Tata Sky collects Rs 300 on subscription, about Rs 150 goes away in taxes,” he said.
“We are left with only Rs 150 out of which we have to pay other taxes and take care of our overheads,” he said.
DTH made its debut in India five years ago. Today there are about six-million subscribers to DTH, he said.
In India, a household spends about 1.5-2 per cent of its income on cable services.
in 30 mnths they have sold 3 million and say its a record
whereas bigtv have added 50000 subscribers which is a more good record than this

Big TV, Air Tel, Sundirect has got advantage when they got into the market because consumers are now aware of the DTH indutry and its knowledge too............its because of Dish TV mainly and TS there after as they were the people who started advertise in the Television SEts about DTH arrivals.............

When Dish TV started i believe the get 1 million subscribers in the country might be difficult task but now to get 1 millions customers DTH providers its easy as now the public is aware of DTH more than before when Dish TV started. It was when TS started its DTH Dish and TS started to compete each which made them to advertise about their products and people became aware of DTH.

I am sure if big tv and airtel and SD were the 1st people to start their DTH servie and if Dish TV and TS started their DTH service now i am sure they will atleast 3- 4 lakh customer with in a month itself.............

OMG so 50% of the money collected from the customers are goes to TAX. I think Govt. needs to give some tax benefits to DTH service providers..........

Thanks...............

regarding the second part part i agree it was my fault as i read the cjignesh comment on big tv saying that it has added 500000 customers but the fact was big tv added only 50000. In this regard i would rather say that if TS and Dish TV launched its service now they would surely added 40000 or 50000 customers per month atleast at this point of time...........
but one thing is sure ... in TN ..BigTv sales are more comparing to any other Dth ...
reason is less ENTRY Price ...1 year free viewing ... also it has more tamil channels ...
problem in BiGtv is S/w ..

TS ..can able increase it sales ..if they add more tamil channels ...

Sundirect is attractive those who love only tamil channels and it has less price of basic package ...

DishTv ..increased its price ...so their sales will down ..Dealer itself accepted that its difficult
to sell DishTv ..because of increase in price ...

I think TN big TV customer might find it difficult after one year of service because of package curretnly many are interested in 1990 and 2190 offer............they will feel the burden of package price only after offer gets completed after 1 year..............

I believe if you are in TN and more keen on Tamil Channels and sports then its better to stick with cable itself as you get all the tamil channels with good clarity and also sports channels...........FYI - SD is giving only 14 or 15 tamil channels in its platform but where in my Hathwy Cable i am getting 28 tamil channels with clear picture and which inludes 4 - 5 cable channel too which are not available in any DTH at all...........but if you are interested only with Sun and Kalaignar TV channels along with other pay channels then you can go for any DTH service.........
Good news! Thanks for the info buddy.
