The company also launched four new games for the PSP platform - MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, Locoroco 2 and Little Big Planet.
The gaming consoles and games will be rolled out by December in India. Sony also revealed Kill Zone 2, the beta version of its popular game Kill Zone. It will be made available by February next year.
Sony, which is a big player in the gaming console market, claims an 80 per cent market share in India. As per the company, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is lagging far behind at about 20 per cent. Meanwhile, the other major golbal player – Nintendo has no significant presence in India, say Sony representatives.
According to NASSCOM data, the gaming industry in India will be worth around $425 million by 2010. Around $125 million would be the share of the gaming console industry.
Sony is planning to "significantly" increase the Indian gaming console market base of around 650,000 and has reduced the prices of its PS2 and PSP models, which have being driving sales growth in terms of number of units sold.
Sony India country manager Atindraya Bose estimates the current gaming console market size in India at $50 million. To this effect Sony has initiated a number of ATL activities such as TVCs' and media ads during the three main holiday seasons in India – summer, diwali and winter vacations. A fresh advertisement thrust is expected in December.
Among the BTL activities, it has decided to hold 'PlayStation Experience' events in three major cities this year – Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai.
The 'PlayStation Experience' is an expo for bringing more people into the gaming fold, as well as for gamers to convene and conquer new games. For hardcore gamers, it conducts championships such as the Fifa championship.
The company also plans to leverage its footprint across all major towns and cities in India through its distribution network comprising over 7000 channel partners, 260 exclusive Sony outlets, and 21 direct branch locations to grow the market in India.
