KARACHI: Transmission of Geo TV, network with widest distribution on cable system in Pakistan, was on Monday stopped in most parts of the port city of Karachi and several other cities in Sindh province.
“Geo transmission is stopped on cable in Karachi,” the network said adding the authorities are not giving any reason for the closure. The television reported that other channels of Geo network were also shut in Karachi and other cities in Sindh including Hyderabad, Sukkar and Mirpurkhas.
Claiming ignorance, the Information Minister in Sindh province Shazia Mari said, “she is unaware about the closure and the action has not been taken by the Peoples Party government.” “It is surprising, sad and condemnable,” Mari told Geo TV.
In Islamabad, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) also denied any role in the closure and said it is holding an inquiry. Meanwhile, Opposition PML-Q party Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain condemned the closure and demanded restoratio n of Geo services.
Last year, Geo and other news channels were shut down on this day, when former President Pervez Musharraf had declared emergency in the country. - PTI
