BSNL EVDO 2.4 Mbps connection(Both USB modem and PCMCIA)
Well I am going to take BSNL EVDO Connection next month.

For those who don’t have information about BSNL EVDO:

BSNL EVDO is a Wireless Based Broadband Service on CDMA network.
It offers Internet at 2.4 Mbps data rate.
EVDO ( EVolution Data Optimize, 3G service in CDMA) is a technology for providing high Speed Internet on CDMA network( Latest version of EVDO provides up to 7.2 Mbps Internet, but its not available with BSNL now).
As 3G is not yet officially launched, BSNL is providing this service on testing and unofficial basis like Reliance’s and Tata’s WIMAX.
BSNL EVDO comes as both USB Modem (Pen Drive like) and PCMCIA Card form factor. BSNL started this service from small towns and some rural places in South India and gradually expanding to all major cities in India.
As BSNL is currently in upgrading phase of its CDMA towers to EVDO enabled. The availability of 2.4 EVDO connection depends on the city and the area in the city where EVDO tower is present.

Depending on the availability of the tower in your area or your wish, you could choose between two speeds. Either EVDO (2.4 Mbps) or CDMA 1x (144Kbps).
Please note whatever you choose, the card or modem will require to be preconfigured at BSNL exchange for that.
The service totally depends on the area of availability and the signal you are getting.
The maximum practical speed I have seen is 1.5 Mbps (which I consider is very good).
However if the tower (in your area or the area you move) is not EVDO enabled, the connection automatically switches to the CDMA 1x and provides speed of 144 Kbps.

BSNL EVDO provides roaming also however it’s available in the state only, nationwide will be soon launched.

Rate and Tariff Plans:

Either USB Modem or PCMCIA card cost Rs. 3500 on out right purchase. For rental basis, you will have to give Rs. 1500 deposit (Rs. 1000 refundable) and the monthly modem rent will be Rs. 200. Minimum commitment is 3 months.

Tariff for EVDO (2.4 Mbps) is Rs. 550 + Tax/month unlimited download
Tariff for CDMA 1x (144 Kbps) is Rs. 250(reduced from 350) + Tax/month unlimited download

Only above two tariff plans are available and Yes it’s too cheap than Internet offered by other companies.

So at starting, for Outright Purchase you will have to pay 3500 + 550 or 250 plus tax.
For Rental Basis you will have to pay 1500 + 550 or 250 plus tax.

Procedure:

The best part is that you need not to have BSNL landline connection to get the BSNL EVDO for both Outright Purchase or Rental basis
If you have BSNL landline connection, it’s very good, no verification will be required.
If you don’t have BSNL landline connection, address verification will be done by BSNL.
Documents required; Photo ID, Address Proof, Passport photo.

You could buy the connection from BSNL exchange or the BSNL Customer Care Centers in your city.

The things you check before taking connection:

Make sure you have EVDO tower in your area; you could find this from BSNL exchange.
If not sure take the modem on Rental basis and if it working fine at EVDO speed, purchase it if you like.

One drawback I would like to inform that it does not give public IP to the computer, it provides only private IP (like 192.16x.x.x). So the download from Torrent and sites like rapidshare is not possible now. However it will be soon made to public IP, as the testing phase gets over and it gets officially launched.

The above information, I haven’t copied from any other forum or website, I typed it as per my knowledge and information I have. And I guarantee that the above information is true.

Next I will post about the cities and the areas if cites where BSNL EVDO Coverage is available as much as possible ( which I will take from other forum)

Thanks

RE: BSNL EVDO 2.4 Mbps connection(Both USB modem and PCMCIA)
Well thanks a lot for this informative post. As of now, I am happy with the 2MBPS Broadband connection of BSNL. But 2.4Mbps unlimited at Rs.550 per month is mouth-watering offer. But private IP....Thats what I hate....!!!

By the way, will the torrent sites or rapid share block IPs randomly....??

Hey Roh, Good Morning!!! How are you?
Yes you are correct, even I didnt belive for the first time I heard about 2.4Mbps at 550, but thats a fact.

For your question about torrent and websites liek Raidshare, megaupload, etc.

I would liek to inform that for torrent it mostly shows download speed 0kbps or if you are lucky then up tp 8 kbps. I think BSNL is blocking it. For rapidshare and other sites , you almostly will message 'Your IP is already downlading a file.' This is because some in the private IP netowrk will be downloading any file

Hi friend, Good Morning to you too. I am absolutely fine. What about you ? Hope you are keeping up good health.

Well let me tell you that I am currently using uTorrent as the application to get the data of torrent files transferred. But why will torrent sites and Rapid Share block IPs..??

So does that mean, if I get connected with this IP : 117.194.228.5 for one time and if I download one torrent, the IP would be put to black list...?? Now the next time, I get connected with 117.194.224.9. So is it so that the next time I am able to download such files again only because a new IP is generated everytime...??

Oops...!! Too many questions....!! SadSad

I am fine buddy, thanks for asking.

Let me explain to you.

BSNL EVDO is giving private IP which belongs to BSNL EVDO private network. Now this private network will have a default gateway-public IP for the outside world through which the users of BSNL EVDO netowrk will communicate with outside world. This public IP is the only address which Torrent or These sites can see. For them this public IP a single user or computer. However there are thousands of users in the network which are communicating with the single public Ip (Default Gateway). Its same like a Internet Connection is shared in Internet Cafes by using proxies. For torrent it will appear than a single computer is starting too many downloading., there fore the speed will be reduced.
For rapid share liek sites, in free account where a single dowaload is possible at one account, it will show 'YourIP address(Public IP) is already downloading a file' as multiple users wil be trying to download

Well buddy if you see my initial post I have provided the cost.

i have also posted the area in Bangalore where EVDO is available. You could check it, I dont think its available in K.S.Layout unless it falls near to the ares I gave in list

EVDO towers are not differnet setup. Its the same CDMA or BSNL tower however they are upgarded for EVDO compability
