Royal Cable Vision moves TDSAT again

NEW DELHI: Nearly a fortnight after the broadcast tribunal ordered Maran brothers and M K Azhagiri to settle their dispute on cable distribution rights, the latter has again knocked at the door of the broadcast tribunal.

Azhagiri-owned Royal Cable Vision (RCV) approached TDSAT seeking clarification on tribunal's earlier order in which Channel Plus, a unit of Sun TV, was directed to give its signals in Madurai.

RCV contended before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal that by the earlier order it has cable distribution rights in entire Madurai city, which was opposed by the Sun TV group.

Sun TV's counsel submitted that it would give signals only for the municipal limits of Madurai city and not for the entire Madurai district.

"Now RCV is going outside the limit of Madurai municipal limit. If it goes outside that then they would have to pay for more subscribers," submitted Sun TV's counsel.

He also alleged that RCV was involved in piracy of signals of its channels and group has concrete evidence regarding it.

Earlier on July 31, on the direction of TDSAT, both had agreed to enter into agreement for an agreed figure of 1.25 lakh subscribers in the city.

Opposing it, RCV's counsel submitted that Madurai city does not mean a city of 72 wards but also includes suburbs and outskirts also.

On this the TDSAT bench headed by Justice Arun Kumar said, "Seventy-two or hundred wards is not an issue. Fact is that City of Madurai is city of Madurai and these things should be settled through negotiation by both parties".
