The final was scheduled for Saturday night but was postponed after the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna dumped rain and strong winds on the New York area.

The weather also delayed the completion of the men's semi-final between Andy Murray and Spain's world No.1 Rafael Nadal, with the Scotsman leading 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 2-3.

When the women's decider is held, it will only be the ninth time a grand slam final will also determine the top spot in the WTA rankings.

The No.1 ranking will change hands in Flushing Meadows because Serbian star Ana Ivanovic was knocked out of the tournament in the second round.

The last grand slam final to feature two women battling for the world number one was the 2004 Australian Open where Justin Henin beat Kim Clijsters.

It has been 13 years since the top spot has changed hands in a grand slam final. Germany's Steffi Graf beat Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the 1995 Wimbledon final to regain the World No.1.

Both Jankovic and Williams have held top spot before but Serena is the more decorated of the two having held it for 57 weeks beginning in July 2002.

Williams is enjoying a resurgence in her game while Jankovic made it to her first grand slam final in 21 tries.

"I am putting in the effort both on and off the court," said Williams who hasn't been to the US Open final in six years.

"Doubles helped too. I am playing a lot more and having more consistent results."

Getting to her first final is a huge relief for Jankovic.

With A view to sustaining and strengthening the new-found interest in boxing post Beijing, the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) is leaving no stone unturned. From organising lavish welcome functions for the boxers to announcing a new competitive league, the IBF is now punching to add a dash of glamour to the sport of valour.

The sports body is planning to lure cine star Sanjay Dutt into the boxing ring as their brand ambassador, hoping to to cash on his presence to make the sport more popular.The cine star would be the guest of honour on the closing of the senior national boxing championship, and the IBF would officially designate him as their brand ambassador on the same day.

"Our boxers, especially Akhil, are pretty impressed with the cine star. So we thought why not to make him the brand ambassador. Moreover, he himself looks like a heavyweight boxer, so he suits the sport well," said IBF president Abhey Singh Chautala.

The boxers, too, looked happy with 'Munna Bhai' coming into the ring. "He has a great charisma and his presence will surely help boxing gain popularity in the country," said Jitender, adding that that it's the best time to market the sport.

Meanwhile, the boxers are finding it hard to cope with the name and fame they are being accorded post Beijing. Vijender and Jitender have been invited to the nationals as guest of honour and they are relishing the honour. "It feels great to be invited to nationals as guest of honour. It gave me great pride to share the dias with out top officials," said Vijender.
